What IS surprising is to find Journey to the Tree of Sorrows in the main heading of a release. For almost a decade, these words have been sprinkled on lore cards inside their dice grimoires, in the small print on GM screens, and on apparel. You may have even found pieces of mythology in blogs, updates, and videos released in the past.
Originally, TOS (the project code for Journey...) was to be an adventure for 5e, or even a roleplaying game in its own right. But it never fit firmly into a production plan. The TOS experience didn't seem right for 5e, and its scope didn't quite justify an RPG in and of itself. Regardless, art and story surrounding the concept kept being produced and TOS continued to lie at the very heart of Infinite Black's aesthetic.
Enter NOCTURNUS. About a year into designing this new cosmic horror roleplaying game, ideas for play scenarios were being discussed. How would Nocturnus be different from other similarly themed RPGs? Besides a certain "deep secret" buried within its setting, the game was to feature multiversal or transdimensional elements that really set it apart. From these brainstorming sessions TOS once again emerged.
And was TOSsed out! Previous TOS details didn't seem to fit. It was once again set aside and Nocturnus development and test playing continued. What changed over the next year was the scope of Nocturnus itself. Initially very specific and limited to setting and story components, it was realized that the game actually had a grander, more epic scale. And with that revelation, TOS immediately stepping forward once more.
Not only did Journey to the Tree of Sorrows fit perfectly into Nocturnus, but it made for a great adventure series within it. Finally, the concept created and promised to its fans for years would happen. For David LaRocca, owner of Infinite Black, it felt necessary for TOS to be an integral part of the upcoming RPG release.
